Christmas Day 2025

 Christmas Eve we were in Antigua and we made our way to Jolly Beach. Jolly beach is a wide and long beach with a ton of activities, restaurants and bars. The sea was quite cold, we spent a couple of relaxing hours there. Had an early night in preparation for the anticipated Christmas Day activities!

Christmas Day was a fun day so many people dressing up in silly costumes. We watched the King’s speech which was televised live. We skipped lunch knowing we had a gala dinner planned in the evening. 

In the afternoon we had a couple of drinks in the deck bar, before going to the quiz. 

It was a formal night so we got glammed up and had a glass of champagne before dinner. Dinner was a bit disappointing, Mr C didn’t get his roast potatoes with the turkey and he said the ‘English Christmas Pudding “ wasn’t the real deal.

Still we enjoyed the evening and the Christmas Show in the theatre rounded off the day nicely.

Ghats, Gouls on the Ganges

We eventually arrived safely in Varanasi and are staying at a delightful Heritage Boutique Hotel. The streets are narrow crowded and filthy with dog and cow muck everywhere so open toed shoes are not recommended. Varanasi is a city in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. Regarded as the spiritual capital of India, the city draws Hindu pilgrims who bathe in the Ganges River’s sacred waters and perform funeral rites. Along the city's winding streets are some 2,000 temples. We were woken up at 5.30 am by the Aarti chanting which takes place every morning.  An   Aarti is a devotional ritual that uses fire as an offering. It's usually made in the form of a lit lamp, and in the case of the Ganges   River, a small diya with a candle and flowers that's floated down the river. La Rochelle and sardine fete

We took the bus to La Rochelle on Saturday, it takes well over an hour from the Ile de Re, 5€ return. We wandered around the old harbour and had a great lunch at one of the crowded restaurants. In the evening we walked into Ars en Re close to the campsite, to take a look at the sardine fete at the port. There were hundreds of people sat at tables tucking into sardines and oysters and there was live “entertainment”. We didn’t join in as the queues for food were so long. The fete lasted 2 days wouldn’t like to guess how many sardines sacrificed their lives for this event. We had a awful night due to a wedding party taking place in a marquee in a field adjacent to the campsite. The music went on until 4.30am. Never want to hear Daft Punk again! We wondered how the revellers all had the energy to be dancing and screaming all night. Drugs, said Mr C. Sunday, our last day on Ile de Re, was a glorious day and luckily we hadn’t planned much as we were shattered after a sleepless night. ...
