Madrid

Tuesday 3rd October we drove from Burgos to Riaza to our overnight stay at Camping Riaza. A quiet site with very clean facilities, good for just one overnight stay.  The Restaurant and shop were both closed, but we had enough provisions to see us through, we always carry emergency rations of wine! The only downside were the bothersome flies preventing us from sitting outside for too long in the evening.

On Wednesday we set off for Madrid a short one hours drive and found Camping Osuna on the outskirts of Madrid easily. It is in a great location for visiting the city. The metro is 10 mins walk and 20 mins gets you right in the heart of Madrid. It is more expensive at £33 per night, due to its proximity to the city. The other downside is the noise being close to the airport and near a road and railway.

Thursday we went to Madrid and took the hop on hop off bus and did the 2 full circles to see the major sites, it cost 11 euros each (concession for over 65s). We found a good tapas bar for lunch and ate sitting at the bar which we discovered is cheaper than sitting at a table. 

Friday back to Madrid to visit the Prada Museum. Once again a good concession for over 65s except Mr C had to pay full admission as he had no ID on him, the attendant didn’t believe he was over 65 or so he likes to believe. Me? I think she was a bit of a jobs worth.

By the end of our visit we were all Goyad out and both decided that he wasn’t anywhere near our favourite artist. I didn’t enjoy his Black Paintings at all (which he did in his latter years) some very disturbing images. But hey ho each to their own.

Saturday Madrid again, to visit the temple of Debod in park de La Montana. The temple was given to Spain by Egypt for their help in the relocation of Abu Simbel.we then went for a wander around the old quarter and had lunch, grateful for google to translate some of the dishes.

Meanwhile back at the campsite, it had turned into a frenzied party atmosphere with locals pouring in to enjoy the entertainment which was very loud music. Bang went our peaceful evening! 

We decided to move on to Toledo on Sunday as we had seen as much as we wanted in Madrid.

Supper in Sapa

There are some very strange things on the menu in Sapa like porcupine, cervit cat, bamboo rat and horse you can have all of them stir fried. We settled for salmon and sturgeon hot pot one evening. So the bowl of stock is bought to the table and placed over a heater and you are given a basket of vegetables and a plate with the fish and tofu then you cook it all yourselves and eat with rice. We also ate street food at the night market, the menu also has some unappetising items such as sparrow, turtle dove and a frog. Everything is barbecued over hot charcoal. Not the best place for vegetarians. We tried a few bits Mr C pork, Mrs C fish then went for a pizza. Vendors in the street are roasting chestnuts in abundance and they are very moorish. They go down very well with the tiny tangerines and fresh pineapple you can buy very cheaply. Coffee is a bit hit and miss and the coffee that the hotel serves for breakfast is vile, luckily I have bought my own coffee bags - thank you Sainsbu...

Stormy Weather!

 We said goodbye to Cabopino, Cliff and Irene and set off for Roquetas de Mar. It had rained all night and was very windy and the drive was a bit hairy due to high winds. However this was nothing to what was to come. . . . Camping Roquetas is quite basic but OK for a short stop over and we were very much in the minority and surrounded by Germans. It was very windy all night and dust storms arrived, we woke up to find Monica covered in a light film of dust.  On Thursday we walked into the nearest town looking for lunch and found a good tapas bar, loads of free tapas on the menu but we bought some too, we had a couple of glasses of wine which cost more than the tapas. More storms over night bought yet more dust and we woke up to a murky haze. Mr C did his best to clean the dust off Monica, we then set off on the 2 hour journey to Mazarron, close to Cartagena.
